Featuring Baker Sabine Garrido of A Love For Cakes Bakery

Today we are featuring another one of my readers.  Sabine owns her bakery in Maspeth, NY.  Her baking life started as a small child in Germany learning her skills from her mother.  All through her childhood she enjoyed her mother’s sweet confections until she moved to London where she studied photography and web design.  Sabine moved to the states in 2003 and decided a career change was in order and started working in pastry kitchens in San Diego and New York.  From 2006 – 2010, she was an executive pastry chef at the event space Capitale in Manhattan, where she refined her cake making skills. After taking a few years off to stay at home with her daughter, she finally launched her life long dream of owning her own bakery with her husband; A Love For Cakes was born.

When did you start your business?  What has been your greatest challenge? I registered as a business in 2012 and moved into my own studio beginning of 2013. The biggest challenge for me was the whole start up process, very scary!

What is your favorite cake decorating technique? I love making gum paste flower decorations and using the brush embroidery technique, it gives something airy and light to the look of the cake.

Not only does Sabine make beautiful airy cakes, she makes these delightful mini desserts as well.

Who are your inspirations in the cake and pastry world?  There are so many amazing cake makers and pastry chefs out there, it is hard to give a complete list, I think I stick to a few only. Maggie Austin, Ron Ben Israel, Toba Garrett, Carrie Clarke from Couture Cake, Michelle Walker from ScrumDiddly Cakes, Alla Levin from the Cake Zone and Susanna from the Sugar Garden.

What are your favorite seasonal ingredients? All things berry and rhubarb.

What tool do you use the most when cake decorating? Which one is your favorite?  The tool most used has to be something mundane like the plastic smoothers to build the cakes, but my favorite is my airbrush.  I love to get it out and play with it, but still have lots to learn, I am only a beginner with it at this point.

Please visit Sabine’s website and see more of her amazing work!
