This phone call takes the cake…

I get all kinds of phone calls at the bakery, and today I received a good one that I had to share with you.  I feel bad for this office worker who has to coordinate birthday cakes for her co-workers…

Me:            Good afternoon, Ron Ben-Israel Cakes.

Caller:       I need a small birthday cake for 10 people.

Me:            What’s the day you need the cake for?

Caller:       Tomorrow

Me:            I would love to be able to help you out, but during wedding season we like to have a few months notice.

Caller:      Even though it’s a small cake?

Me:            Yes, Ma’am.

Caller:       I have one guy who is Jewish, another with a milk allergy and another who is allergic to wheat.  Is there someone you can recommend?

Me:            I have never had all of those requested of me at the same time, and I don’t even know if any of our colleagues would do that combination.

Caller:       I tell ya, I am the office coordinator, and we always celebrate everyone’s birthday on staff.  But trying to get a birthday cake for these people?                       It’s the only time I truly dislike my job.

Me:            Well I am sorry that I can’t help you out, but I really don’t know if anyone can…

Caller:       (Laughing) Thank you for your time, maybe I will just get a regular cake, tell them it’s gluten free, dairy free and kosher.  Then I am going to                       grab a bag of popcorn and pull up chair and watch the fun unfold!

Me:            Well have fun with that and good luck.

Caller:       I need all the luck I can get.  Thanks and have a great day.

  1. Please refer the caller to the Lifetime network where reruns of Fraiser run all evening on Friday’s. She needs a therapist, not a cake.

  2. My late mother had strange allergies for a few years, so I understand what you’re dealing with.

Thankfully, There are KOSHER companies that provide gluten-free and dairy-free products for your customers. Check them out!
